England call up Spencer ahead of World Cup final

Ben Spencer has been called up by England to replace the injured Willi Heinz ahead of next Saturday’s World Cup final.

The Saracens scrum-half featured in England’s final Guinness Six Nations clash with Scotland in March, but missed out on the squad for Japan.

However, he has now been called in with Heinz having injured his hamstring after coming off the bench in the semi-final victory over New Zealand.

Spencer had been due to feature for Saracens in their Premiership clash with Leicester Tigers, but instead will join up with the England squad in Tokyo on Monday.

A statement for England said: “Ben Spencer will join the England squad tomorrow as an injury replacement for Willi Heinz.

“Heinz injured his hamstring during England’s semi-final win over New Zealand last night. He will remain with the squad until the end of the tournament.”

Heinz was one of just two scrum-halves in the England squad, with Ben Youngs the other.

That means that Spencer will most likely be included in the matchday 23 for the final in Yokohama on Saturday.

He has three caps to his name, having played twice against South Africa in June 2018, before that Calcutta Cup clash in March.
