Siwan – Eyes on the prize and keep talking

Wales Women captain Siwan Lillicrap is determined to make the most of the ‘lockdown’ period.

“Our eyes are on the prize,” said the 34-times capped backrow.

“We’re just 15 months out from the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand so it’s vital we keep focussed and try to make gains during this time.

“It can be tough training on your own but we have weekly programmes to follow, we’ve got nutritional support and we’ve used the time to learn and develop our understanding of what we do so it’s been good from that point of view. It’s important to stay on top of training as well as other commitments such as work and family. I make lists at the start of the week and that helps me to get a sense of achievement.

“It would be easy to sit back at the moment but if we do, others will make those gains on us. That provides an added motivation to help complete some savage sessions at times.”

Siwan, who also plays for Bristol Bears in the Tyrell’s Premier 15s, admits to having some moral support while training at home.

“My cocker spaniel Ralph comes on every running session with me and that’s a big help!”

Away from her own performance aims, Siwan is head of rugby at Swansea University, a role that keeps her on her toes at the best of times.

“I’ve been really busy from a work point of view during ‘lockdown’.

“When rugby activity ended, we got to work to provide programmes for our players, reviewed performances and set work-ons ahead of next season and also contacted all our incoming students. We have supported them with strength and conditioning help ahead of next term and now we have the best opportunity to plan than ever before – although I’d rather be in work!

“We should have played Varsity last week so it’s a shame to see some students leave without having the chance to participate in an event like that. We will look to mark their achievements either online or when rugby resumes.”

Like many families, Siwan’s family has been affected by Coronavirus in some way. My mother and her partner, an NHS worker, had to completely isolate for two weeks after he fell ill. Luckily he’s made a full recovery but I stepped in to help care for my grandparents. It’s been nice seeing them more often when taking up meals and supplies and have a chat through the window or door. I also set them up on Facetime so the whole family can stay in touch.

“I think that’s key for us as rugby players too – staying in contact. Rugby is our escape, it’s where our friends are and we’re used to seeing each other in the gym and on the training pitch – whether you play for a community club or professionally. We are all looking forward to getting back to that but until then, supporting each other is key.”
